What it is
Reimplemented 1:1
Translated line by line from Daggerfall Unity's C#. Bugs included, on purpose.
Rebuilt
A hand-rolled WebGL2 renderer with no engine underneath, and a procedural sky.
In progress
Not finished. You cannot import classic or Daggerfall Unity saves yet, and there is no mod support. The ledger tracks the rest.
How to play
Three steps, and the first two only happen once.
Press Play and pick your ARENA2 folder.
On Steam it is under DF/DAGGER/ARENA2. Pick it or drop it on the page; on a phone, hand over the zip. You will not be asked again.
Then play.
You wake in Privateer's Hold, as everyone does. Touch controls appear on their own.
- Controls
- Daggerfall Unity's defaults. WASD and mouse, F6 for the pack, F9 and F11 to quick save and load, Esc for the rest. Rebind anything in Settings.
- Browsers
- Any current one with WebGL2: Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari.
- Saves
- In your browser's storage. The desktop app keeps them as real files instead.
- The desktop app
- Optional. Saves become real files you can back up, it reads ARENA2 straight from disk, it works offline, and on Windows and Linux it updates itself. Download for Windows, macOS or Linux (on Windows the
-setupfile installs where you choose; the-portableone runs from wherever you put it), or build it from source. - If it breaks
- Reload first. If it is still broken, file it on the issue tracker and say what you did.
What's in it
All of this is in the game now.
- The world
- The whole Iliac Bay, streamed as you walk it. Weather and seasons run on the game's calendar.
- Towns and people
- Shops, taverns, banks and guild halls. People who talk and take offence, a watch that arrests you, a court that tries you.
- Dungeons
- The classic dungeons with their locks, teleporters and traps, and an automap that fills in as you go.
- Combat
- Daggerfall's own hit and damage formulas. Armour wears out, and enemies run when they are losing.
- Magic
- The spellbook, the spell and item makers, and the Daedric artifacts.
- Your character
- The class questions, custom classes and the biography. Then levelling and reputation.
- Quests
- 265 of them, running on the game's own scripts and tracked in the journal.
- The screens
- Every classic window laid out from the original art, with a modern set beside it. One press switches.
- Sound and music
- The game's sounds, and its MIDI through a synth written for this project. Your own tracks work too.
